LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

He said, She said: Reality television is all the rage, and soon it will be ragin’ in the Valley. That’s because two local radio personalities – Tiffany Nelson and Corey LaRusso – will be hosting “The Weekenders Golf Tour’’ along with comedian Bob Kubota.

The pilot for the program is being filmed Sept. 11 (ominous sign) at Arrowhead Country Club in Glendale. Basically, the brainchild of Alan Abrams, the series features two-man teams of hackers (10 handicap or higher) in a scramble-best ball-stableford format. Sound unreal?

Perhaps most unreal is that LaRusso, who co-hosts “Backspin The Golf Show’’ on XTRA Sports, and Nelson, who co-hosts “The Bunker to Bunker Golf Show’’ on ESPN, are putting away any rivalry to co-host the same TV show. Actually, their conflicting personalities just might work, although neither has a bad word to say about the other.

“I think our chemistry on air is pretty good,’’ said Nelson, who also does golf for Channel 15. “I like the guy. I just like to pick on him, because it’s easy. And if I rip on him a little, it’s just for fun.’’

Countered LaRusso: “We hardly get along, it’s true. But it’s mostly ‘he said, she said’ stuff, so maybe it will work. I think that both of us think (the show’s) enthusiasm and ambition is great. But it’s wait and see, really.’’

Hmmm. This actually might work as long Nelson and LaRusso play with rubber darts. Certainly the format will be interesting, and the bottom line is that the guests will still have to perform if it launches beyond the pilot.

“The more personalities – the more drama queens and outspoken-types of people – the better it is for the show,’’ Nelson said. “It’s kinda of like ‘Survivor’ in that way, because if the guests aren’t a little bit out there – without being obnoxious – it won’t work for TV.’’

Apparently Kubota will add the “light-hearted sarcasm,’’ although don’t be surprised if Nelson and LaRusso stand him up. Chances are that won’t happen, as Kubota is a veteran of “Comedy Central’’ and MTV, and a current member of “Comics On Duty,’’ a group that entertains military troops.

The basic plot is you get six to eight two-man teams (that includes women) to square off for 18 holes – nine holes of scramble and nine holes of alternate shot. The scoring, which is not quite official yet, is Stableford, such as 500 points for an eagle, 200 points for a birdie, 100 points for a par, minus-100 points for a bogey and minus-300 points for a double or worse. Most points wins.

“We’ll pick some of the contestants, and the rest of the cast will be selected from voters on the Internet,’’ said Nelson, noting that the website to vote at is www.weekendersgolf.com. “The team with the most points (from the pilot) will each get a spot in the FBR Open pro-am.’’

Should “Weekenders Golf Tour’’ take off, the plan is to do a series of 18 shows, with the winners to square off in Hawaii. That certainly will be an improvement from the casting call, as the original 12 teams that auditioned for the show recently had to survive 116-degree heat at Arrowhead.

NOTEWORTHY

Medal ceremony: One of the East Valley’s top amateur events, The Medalist, takes place Sept. 8-10 at three of Fountain Hills’ finest – Eagle Mountain, SunRidge Canyon and We-Ko-Pa. The 54-hole tournament, which requires a $250 entry fee and valid USGA handicap, includes green fees, golf cart, practice balls and an awards banquet.

Winners in each of the four divisions – Gold, Silver, Copper and senior (55 and over) – earn corresponding medals, like the old days in Scotland. To enter, visit www.themedalist.net.

Tigress: Phoenix’s Cheyene Woods, the 16-year-old niece of Tiger Woods,

will play in this week’s Wal-Mart Open on the Champions Tour. The Xavier Prep star will be paired with two-time Masters champ Ben Crenshaw in the 54-hole event that features kids from the First Tee program. The tournament will be televised on The Golf Channel.

Showtime: Registration is now under way for the 2006 PGA Fall Expo at Mandalay Bay Resort on Sept. 13-14. The PGA’s fall extravaganza features over 300 merchandisers and manufacturers, with more information available at www.pgafallexpo.com.

And, finally: Zagat Survey, the world’s leading provider of consumer survey-based leisure content, is currently conducting its online survey of “ America’s Top Golf Courses.” Avid golfers are encouraged to vote at www.zagat.com.
