Dan Majerle: The former Suns star turned Suns broadcaster is gearing up for his rather large charity tournament on Friday at The Phoenician in Scottsdale. In all 40 foursomes and 40 celebrities will take part in the Dan Majerle Celebrity Classic presented by First National Bank of Arizona, which raises funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

“I got involved with the Boys and Girls clubs when I was in Miami (with the Heat),’’ reported Majerle, who is doing his second fund-raiser for the organization. “It was (former Suns player) Ricky Blanton who got me involved with the Boys and Girls clubs, and for me, it’s been a perfect fit.’’

Joining Majerle will be former Suns Truck Robinson, Alvan Adams and Cedric Ceballos, along with such former sports stars as Bob Uecker, Harmon Killebrew, Steve Stone, Vinny del Negro and Vince Coleman, to name a few. The tournament is full, but open to the public.

“Last year, we raised about $260,000, which is a lot of money to raise in a golf tournament,’’ Majerle noted. “I do a lot of these types of tournaments, usually with the Suns, but this is the biggest moment of the year for me, personally.’’

Majerle, who is in his second year with Fox Sports Net and UPN (Channel 45), said he would probably play in more events – “I love the game’’ – if not for his busy schedule. He also has worked as a broadcaster for ESPN and TNT.

A scratch handicap, Majerle certainly has game, which is a tribute to his athletic skills. “I grew up in Michigan, and didn’t play any golf until I was drafted by the Suns in 1988,’’ he said. “I really got into it a couple of years later when I joined Arizona Country club.’’

Among his feats: He’s shot 68 on three different occasions at three different courses – Arizona CC, the Renegade Course at Desert Mountain and Southern Dunes. He also has three holes-in-one.

“The first (ace) came in Miami, and I made the first-ever hole-in-one at Southern Dunes,’’ he said. “What’s cool about the second hole-in-one was, four days later I had the third one at Arizona Country Club – two in one week.’’

Another factor that holds down on his golf is his large family, he said. “My wife and I have four kids – three girls ages 10, 8 and 5, and a little boy who is 3. They’re really into sports, but too young for golf, although that will change shortly.’’

His kids are one of he biggest reasons he enjoys doing charity work for the Boys and Girls clubs, he added. “Having kids myself, whatever I can do for other kids, that’s very important to me. As an organization, the Boys and Girls clubs do such a great job of lining up activities and really keeping kids off the streets. If I can make life easier for any kid, that’s what I want to do.’’

NOTEWORTHY

ONE YEAR AWAY: The Tucson Daily Star has reported that the WGC-Accenture World Match Play Championship held at LaCosta Resort & Spa for the past seven years will be moving to the Old Pueblo in 2007. The official announcement, according to the newspaper, will come during tournament week (Feb. 20-26). The event will be staged on

the South Course at The Gallery at Dove Mountain. Which means Tiger Woods will be

returning to Arizona even if it’s not at the FBR Open.

ACES WILD: The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club’s annual hole-in-one contest at San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler takes place Feb. 18-2

0, Feb. 24-26 and March 3-5. The event, which includes weekly prizes and a four-way shootout on March 5 for the overall championship, costs $1 a ball. It will be held each of those dates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last year, the organization raised over $40,000 for East Valley charities.

JOB CENTRAL: The PGA of America is conducting its fifth annual “Jobs in Golf Month’’ throughout February. Those interested in a job in the golf industry as well as perspective employers can be found at www.PGA.com/employment.

GOOSE FEATHER: The Scottsdale-based Grey Goose Gateway Tour can add yet another feather to its cap when it comes to alumni who have made the big-time. That’s right, J.B. Holmes, the winner of last week’s FBR Open, played in several Grey Goose events last fall prior to winning the PGA Tour’s qualifying school tournament.
