Scottsdale pro London
gets another 'Big Break'

When last seen on The Golf Channel’s “Big Break VI: Trump National,’’ Laura London was bidding a tearful farewell, bowing out in the golf reality show’s seventh episode.

Whether that emotional ending played a part in her being offered another chance on TGF’s “Big Break VII: The Reunion,’’ no one is saying. But either way, the Scottsdale pro is returning to the mix, she told The Tribune on Wednesday.

“I was shocked,’’ London said of being selected as one of the eight women who will compete in the latest edition of the Big Break along with eight men.

“I was sitting at Teakwoods in Scottsdale having lunch with my mom a couple of months ago when I got a call from one of The Golf Channel coordinators, who said she wanted me to come to Orlando and talk with them. My first reaction was: Had I broken a rule or something?’’

Turns out, TGC wanted London to come back for the reunion tour, an event that has yet to be announced, although it will air some time in the spring, London added.

“I can’t tell you how excited I was, because at the time I got the call for Big Break VII, I had not yet been eliminated from Big Break VI,’’ said the 26-year-old Arizona State graduate. “So I knew I was going to be on the Big Break VII even before VI was completed.’’

Mark Mitchell, a spokesperson for TGC, said the other 15 contestants will announced in the next week or so. But apparently the Big Break VII already has been filmed at the Reunion Golf Club in Orlando, a tournament site for both the LPGA and Champions tours.

Asked why she thought TGC had invited her back, London laughed. “I think they brought me on as a catalyst. I guess I can see other’s quirks, even if I can’t see my own quirks.’’

As for her tearful farewell, that also brought a chuckle.

“I’m not a cryer, but I was very emotionally involved in Big Break VI,’’ she said. “I’d never cry at a tournament. I’d at least wait until I got in my car to go home.

“But I did cry a couple of times (in the Big Break VI). I cried when my partner and good friend Albert (Crews) was eliminated. And I lost it when I was eliminated, even though I couldn’t bring myself to watch that episode because I was so embarrassed.’’

How London fares in Big Break VII also is under wraps. And don’t try and get her to divulge her fellow competitors or the outcome before their time, she said.

“I’ve gotten really good at keeping secrets,’’ London said. “In fact, I should be a spy for the government.’’

So why did TGC decide to bring Laura London back for an encore?

“I guess it’s because the Big Break series is just as much about personalities as it is about golf,’’ she said. “The fact that I was asked back along with a very selected group of people that were the ‘personalities’ of previous Big Breaks, that was just luck.

“Seriously, I don’t think I have that great of a personality.’’

Evidently, not everyone agrees.
