Scottssdale’s Todd Demsey and Bret Guetz paced a contingent of East Valley pros who advanced to the final stage of the PGA Tour’s qualifying school on Saturday.
Demsey was one of three former Arizona State All-Americans to move on from the second-stage qualifier held this week at Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa. A Nationwide Tour regular this past season, Demsey carded a 2-under-par 70 during Saturday’s final round to tie for fourth place at 15-under 273.
Kevin Streelman (66) of Winfield, Ill., and Chris Kirks (68) of St. Simon Island, Ga., shared medalist honors at 17 under par. Guetz, who played on the Gateway Tour this past year, was third at 16 under after shooting 71.
The biggest move of the day belonged Alejandro Canizares, the former ASU great from Spain who birdied his last three holes to become one of 21 players to advance. The magic number was 10 under, and Canizares closed with a 66 to finish in a tie for 13th at 11 under.
Also advancing was another Sun Devil, Darren Angel, who played on ASU’s 1996 NCAA Championship team. Angel shot 68 to finish alone in 12th place at 12 under.
Scottsdale’s Scott Harrington (69, 10 under) also earned a ticket to the finals, which will be played Nov..28 through Dec. 3 at Winter Park, Fla. But former University of Arizona All-American Ricky Barnes, who also lives in Scottsdale, came up one shot shy after a 70 dropped him into a tie for 22nd place.
